Submission Guidelines

Write Freely. Roast Boldly. But Know the Rules.

At The Honest Obituary, we believe obituaries should be raw, real, and unfiltered. But to keep this playground safe (and to keep us out of court), here are a few ground rules:

What You Can Post:

  • Honest obituaries for the dead, dead things, dead philosophies, dead identities, so so so much more….
  • Obituaries for people who are “dead to you” (yes, your ex, your boss, or your frenemy counts).
  • Funny, petty, heartfelt, savage, quirky, or poetic tributes.
  • Original content only, your own words, your own brilliance.

What You Cannot Post:

  • Threats of violence or anything that looks like a crime confession.
  • Hate speech against protected groups.
  • Private, sensitive info (like phone numbers, home addresses, Social Security numbers).
  • Copyrighted or stolen material.
  • Spam, ads, or pyramid scheme pitches (sorry, “religious hustlers”).

Our Right to Moderate

We don't like censoring honesty. But we do reserve the right to remove, edit, or refuse content if it:

  • Violates these rules.
  • Breaks the law.
  • Or makes our lawyer sweat too much.

Disclaimer

Every obituary on this site is user-submitted. They are opinions, satire, parody, or personal experiences, not verified facts. If you read something here and don't like it, who cares! That is why we made this site, sometimes it is difficult to like honesty. If you don't like what someone wrote (unless it goes against these terms and should be reported.) go to some other site that you can stay contained and comfy with your own unchallenged opinions. We wish you the best.

Final Words Before You Write:

This is your chance to: Honor a beloved pet. Roast an ex one last time or tell the truth about Uncle Marty's terrible casseroles. Let go of something you no longer need. Be bold. Be funny. Be real. Just don't break the law.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is The Honest Obituary?
It's the internet's first home for obituaries that tell the truth, the whole truth, the hilarious truth, and nothing but the truth. You can write about people who have passed, people who are “dead to you,” or even your pets.

Can I write about someone who's still alive?
Yes. That's what the “Dead to Me” category is for. They're not technically gone, but they're gone from your life (exes, bosses, flaky friends, etc.).

Can I write about pets?
Absolutely. Pets deserve their own send-off, whether they were angels or tiny furry terrorists. Cats, dogs, hamsters, goats, snakes, all welcome.

Is this satire or serious?
Both. Some posts are heartfelt. Some are funny. Some are brutally savage. We don't tell you how to grieve, roast, or reminisce, that's up to you. Just no defamation and follow the terms and conditions.

Can I stay anonymous?
Yes. You can post under your name, a fake name, or no name at all. Just don't pretend to be someone else.

Will you edit my post or comments?
Nope. What you write is what gets posted, unless it breaks our Guidelines / Terms (hate speech, doxxing, etc.). We may remove posts that break the rules, but we won't rewrite your words.

Could I get sued for what I write?
We're not your lawyer, but here's the deal: you're responsible for your words. Honest opinions, parody, or satire = usually fine. Flat-out defamatory lies = not fine & not good for you.

Is this legal?
Yes. Section 230 of U.S. law protects platforms like us from being held responsible for user posts. You're free to speak your truth, we just provide the stage.

Who owns the content I post?
You do. By posting, you give The Honest Obituary the right to display, archive, and share it. We're not stealing your masterpiece, just showing it off.

Can I delete my post later?
Yes. Email us at info@thehonestobituaries.com with the post link, and we'll take it down.

Do you fact-check submissions?
Nope. These are opinions, memories, and sometimes pure chaos. If you want fact-checked obituaries, the newspaper still exists (for now).

Can people steal my post?
Your post is protected under copyright law (because you wrote it), but this is the internet, someone might copy it. If they do, you can request a takedown.

What if I want to advertise, sponsor, or collaborate?
Drop us a line at info@thehonestobituaries.com. Just don't pitch us an MLM or religious “opportunity.”
